Flamengo was defeated by Palmeiras 3-0 on Saturday night (23), at Maracanã, for the 17th round of the Brazilian Championship. Despite creating the best opportunities at the start of the match, Flamengo had Carrascal sent off in the first half and had to play with one less player for most of the game. Flaco López, Allan and Paulinho scored the goals for the São Paulo team. With the result, Flamengo missed the opportunity to reduce the gap to the top of the competition and now turns its attention to the match against Cusco, for the Libertadores.

The game

The match started at an intense pace, and Flamengo had the first chance in the very first minute. After stealing the ball in the attacking half, Samuel Lino unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, and Carlos Miguel dived to his right to parry it away. Without rushing, the Flamengo team worked the ball in the attacking third, exchanging passes and looking for spaces to penetrate the Palmeiras penalty area.

At 14 minutes, Flamengo threatened again. The team regained possession in attack, Paquetá quickly exchanged passes with Samuel Lino, received the ball back inside the area and tried to lob Carlos Miguel, who stretched to prevent the first goal of the match.

As the match approached the halfway point of the first half, Carrascal was sent off after a challenge with Murilo. The Colombian raised his foot too high and struck the Palmeiras defender in the face. The referee showed a straight red card to the Flamengo player.

Even with one player less, Flamengo remained competitive and more present in the attacking field than their opponent. However, in the final stretch of the first half, Palmeiras opened the scoring with Flaco López. The Argentinian cleared the marking inside the area and shot with his left foot to beat Rossi: 1-0. Despite being superior for much of the first half, Flamengo went into halftime trailing.

Returning for the second half, coach Leonardo Jardim brought on Bruno Henrique in place of Evertton Araujo to make the team even more offensive. In the 9th minute, Paquetá took a free kick into the box and Samuel Lino headed it towards goal, forcing a great save from Carlos Miguel.

Subsequently, Palmeiras capitalized on a counter-attack and extended their lead. Allan got to the ball in the box before Varela and, with his shoulder, managed to put it into the net: 2-0.

Even in the face of the adverse scenario, Flamengo continued to seek the attack, but found it difficult to overcome the Palmeiras defense. At 34', Paquetá made a good play on the right side of the area and took a placed shot, aiming for the corner of Carlos Miguel's goal. The ball went very close.

In stoppage time, Palmeiras scored a third goal through Paulinho, sealing the final score.

With the unfavorable result, Flamengo missed the chance to close the gap on the Brazilian Championship leaders, but still has one game less than their opponent. In the next round, the Rubro-Negro will face Coritiba at the Maracanã, in their last match before the World Cup break.
