Flamengo loses to Santos in the penultimate round of the Brazilian Championship
Mais Querido returns to the field next Thursday (9) to end its participation in the competition
By Paulo Neto* - inIn a game valid for the 37th round of the Brasileirão, Flamengo lost to Santos 1-0, on Monday night (6), at Maracanã. The team fought until the end, but was unable to find the net.
The game
Flamengo started the match aggressively, attacking heavily down the right flank in the opening minutes with Matheuzinho and Everton Ribeiro. And it was down this corridor that Flamengo first threatened: Andreas made a beautiful play and received the ball on the byline; Pedro narrowly missed the cross, and the ball ended up with the Santos goalkeeper. In the 12th minute, the opposing team threatened after a counterattack, with Marcos Leonardo's shot, but Hugo made a good save, without conceding a rebound. Pressing down the right flank, Flamengo managed to find the back of the net. Everton Ribeiro found Matheuzinho on the wing, and the full-back sent a low cross into the middle of the box; Pedro, with great skill, finished into the corner of the net. After a review, VAR flagged the play for offside.
Then it was the goalkeepers' turn to shine: Marinho received the ball in the box and fired a well-placed shot, but Hugo made a great save to save Mengão. Following pressure from Flamengo, Kaiky made a poor pass back and set up Gabi; the striker was one-on-one with João Paulo, but the goalkeeper closed the angle and made a fine save. Late in the first half, there was still time for the red-and-black team to come back. Standing on his feet, Gabi found Pedro inside the box, and the forward skillfully laid off the ball for João Gomes, who was running into the box. João Paulo made a stunning save from the midfielder's shot.
After the restart for the second half, Flamengo immediately threatened. Andreas found Gustavo Henrique at the edge of the box following a short corner kick, and the defender fired a powerful shot, but João Paulo made a solid save. In the 11th minute, Santos opened the scoring. Marcos Guilherme burst into the box, found Marcos Leonardo, who slotted it into the corner. Soon after, Vitinho played a one-two with Pedro, entered the box, and was brought down. The referee awarded a penalty to Flamengo. Gabi's shot hit the post.
Rubro-Negro fought until the end, but Marcos Leonardo's goal gave the final score to the match.
