The game
Away from home, Flamengo pushed forward from the opening minutes, but the game started out tight. The Rio de Janeiro team had its best chances in the first half through Leandro Damião, who narrowly missed reaching the ball just steps from the goal line, and Diego, who in the same play challenged the defender and earned a corner. Sport, meanwhile, threatened for the first time in the 20th minute through Rithely, but the midfielder was denied by a great save from Muralha, who used his foot to perform a miracle.
After the move, Sport grew into the match and enjoyed a few minutes of offensive superiority by exploiting counterattacks, but were always stopped by the Mais Querido's defenders. For Flamengo, Arão and Diego took chances from outside the box, but the ball never reached the net—and when it did, it was a waste: another shot by the number 35, in the 33rd minute, found the midfielder offside. At this point, the Rio de Janeiro club was already taking control of the match again, and threatened with a beautiful play by Damião. After a one-two with Renê, he shot toward Magrão's left corner, but the goalkeeper flew to save. Sport only threatened again with a shot that hit the crossbar in the final play of the first half.
The teams returned to the field for the second half without any changes. Just two minutes in, Damião turned beautifully and unleashed a bomb, which exploded off Durval. The forward then stole the ball and crossed to Ederson, but the midfielder couldn't reach it. Ten minutes in, Sport opened the scoring with Osvaldo, a shot from outside the box. Soon after, Zé Ricardo made a change: he took off Ederson and brought on Vinicius Júnior. Later, Vizeu and Mancuello also came on for Diego and Márcio Araújo. Flamengo's attacking volume increased, but the match remained back-and-forth. The home team extended their lead with Thomás in the 38th minute to make it 2-0.
