Flamengo loses 2-1 in their farewell match at Maracanã
Rubro-Negro opens the scoring, but suffers a comeback against Goiás and loses its place in the G4
By From the team at Flamengo's official website - inFlamengo's farewell to Maracanã in this Brasileirão didn't go quite as expected by the team, coaching staff, and fans. Even after opening the scoring with Toró early in the second half, the team from Gávea suffered a lightning comeback from Goiás, with goals from Hugo and Otacílio Neto in the 39th and 41st minutes, and was defeated 2-1. With the loss, the team remains on nine points but loses its spot in the top four.
"We created the chances, but we ended up conceding the goals. Obviously, we were disappointed with the result and with the first half of the Brasileirão ending this way. We hope to improve after the World Cup. But they only had two chances, and for that, they deserve credit. The kid hit a very good free kick, and then, on the other goal, they took advantage of the rebound," said defender David.
Flamengo will now only return to Brasileirão action on July 14th, in a derby against Botafogo. The group will have the next week off and should only begin an offseason after that.
Lots of race and few chances
The first half between Flamengo and Goiás wasn't among the Rubro-Negro's best 45 minutes of the season. The match began without many scoring chances for either team, which stood out more for their strong defenses than for their creativity in midfield. Proof of this is that Flamengo managed only one shot in the first half: in the 31st minute, when Toró was brought down on the edge of the box after making a great individual play. Bruno took the free kick, but the ball went over the goal.
In the 21st and 27th minutes, Léo Moura and Vinicius Pacheco also had good chances, but they didn't manage to get a shot on goal. In the first attempt, Michael left the number 2 free in the box, but the Goiás defense cleared it. The same happened in the second, when Pacheco was unable to turn the ball around inside the six-yard box. Goiás's big opportunity came in the 37th minute, when Bernardo was released through the defense. However, Welinton tracked him well, and the ball fell to Bruno.
Cold shower
Realizing the need for more creativity, Rogério Lourenço made changes at halftime: he took off Maldonado and brought on Camacho. The strategy already showed signs of success in the first two attacks by Flamengo. Even before the first minute of play, Vinícius Pacheco made a good run down the right and passed to Mezenga, who just couldn't reach the ball. Soon after, Mezenga cut inside the defender and fired a powerful shot that Rodrigo saved. It was enough to ignite the Maracanã fans. And in the fifth minute, Flamengo finally opened the scoring. Camacho initiated a good move down the right and passed to Léo Moura, who crossed low. Vinícius Pacheco created the cutback and left Toró free to tap it into the right corner of Calaça's net: 1-0.
The goal galvanized Flamengo, who continued to press. In the 15th minute, Vinícius Pacheco burst into the box and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper, nearly scoring a second. In the 28th minute, Flamengo suffered a scare when Tolói headed the ball back to level the score, but he was ruled offside. Six minutes later, Rogério Lourenço's men were again a handful, and Flamengo nearly extended their lead. Camacho made a great steal in midfield, leaving Diego Maurício free to shoot, but the ball skimmed the post. Shortly after, the same number 49 had another good chance, but once again shot wide.
And it was Goiás who ended up scoring. Twice. A beautiful free kick from Hugo in the 39th minute equalized for Goiás, and two minutes later, the comeback came with Otacílio Neto's goal, latching onto Bruno's rebound. A result that stunned the nearly 17 red-and-black fans at the Maracanã stadium.
