When Flamengo takes the field to face Vasco da Gama this Sunday (August 01.08st) at 18:30 p.m., it won't just be Rio de Janeiro, where it has the vast majority of its fans. Another state, almost 3 kilometers from the Marvelous City, will be tuning in to Maracanã, whether on TV, radio, or the internet. This is Ceará, where, according to a survey commissioned by Jornal O Povo and conducted by the Datafolha institute, Flamengo has the largest fan base, with 19% of the population.
The study was published last weekend by the newspaper and greatly pleased defender Ronaldo Angelim, from Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará. However, while pleasing, the result doesn't surprise him.
"I already knew about that. It's not news to me (laughs). I'm from Juazeiro do Norte, I played for a long time in Fortaleza and I know that Flamengo's fans are the biggest in Ceará. I'm very happy about that and I hope we can give a gift to the people of Ceará and all the Flamengo fans in Brazil this Sunday," he said.
The survey interviewed 912 people in Ceará between the 14th and 15th of this month and asked the question: Which soccer team do you support? The responses were spontaneous and unique, with no option to choose between two teams. Thus, Flamengo came in first with 19%, followed by Ceará with 13%, Fortaleza and Corinthians with 9%.
In the interior of the state, the situation is even more red-and-black. According to the study, Flamengo has 26% of the fans, followed by Corinthians, with 11%.
national sovereignty – The same Datafolha Institute, at the end of 2009, conducted a similar survey, nationwide, and Flamengo came out on top once again. According to the study, the Rio de Janeiro club has the most fans in Brazil (19%), followed by Corinthians (13%) and São Paulo (8%).
