Few players on the roster identify with Flamengo as deeply as Ronaldo Angelim. Starting his sixth season with his beloved club, the defender, who has won numerous trophies with the club, including a sixth Brazilian championship title, where he scored the winning goal, has had his contract extended until the end of 2011. His previous contract expired mid-year.
And the decision to count on the player at this important transitional moment was unanimous. Both the club's board and the Football Board wanted to recognize the extraordinary role Angelim has played in the Flamengo jersey.
"In this process of renewing the squad, retaining a player like Ronaldo Angelim, like Léo Moura, who knows the club, the fans, and the magnitude of the challenge of defending Flamengo, is fundamental. It's very important that the young players have these role models, as they are the best possible," said football director Luis Augusto Veloso, recognizing the defender's leadership role.
Coach Luxemburgo was another to recognize that Angelim's professional approach will be very important for the entire red-black squad.
"Angelim's contract ran until mid-year, and in a conversation with the board, we analyzed his track record. Since he has a strong connection with the club and we need players with that profile for this long season, we opted to renew his contract until the end of the year," Luxa concluded.
Angelim has played 254 official matches for Flamengo, scoring 16 goals and providing three assists. The defender has received 36 yellow cards and has never been sent off while wearing the club's jersey. With the club, he won three state championships (August 7, 2009), a Brazilian Cup, and the 2009 Brazilian Championship.
