In the 22nd round of the Brasileirão, Flamengo drew 1-1 with Grêmio on Sunday afternoon (31) at Maracanã. The red-black team took the lead with Arrascaeta, but ended up suffering the draw in the final stretch of the second half with a penalty goal scored by Tiago Volpi. Even with the draw, Rubro-Negro remains in the lead of the championship with 47 points.

The game

Less than a minute into the match, Flamengo attacked and threatened. De La Cruz took a shot from outside the box, but the ball went over the goal. In complete control, Flamengo pressed Grêmio in their own half, looking to open the scoring early on. 

As the minutes passed, the pace became more measured, but Flamengo dominated. The Gaucho team congested the edge of the box and tightly closed down the spaces, thus hindering Flamengo's infiltration plays. In the 26th minute, Saúl made a beautiful pass to Ayrton Lucas, who crossed into the box. The defender rose before Pedro to deflect what would inevitably have been the game's first goal. 

In the 40th minute, Flamengo had two incredible chances to open the scoring. The first, Saúl delivered a pass, Ortiz tried to deflect it, and the ball fell to Arrascaeta. He sent a low cross into the middle of the box, and Pedro fired a first-time shot, which Tiago Volpi made a great save. 

On the next play, Léo Pereira sent a shot into the middle of the box, the ball deflected off the marker and fell to the number 9. He tried to chip it over the goalkeeper, but Noriega was there to clear it off the line. The first half ended scoreless, despite the club's overwhelming dominance. 

In the second half, Flamengo came back pressing from the first minute, occupying their entire attacking zone and leaving Grêmio at bay. And the strategy paid off! In the seventh minute, Mengão opened the scoring, much to the delight of the Red-Black Nation. Arrascaeta played a one-two with Pedro, received the ball back, and fired a low shot into the corner, leaving Volpi with no chance: 1-0. It was the number 12's 10th goal in the Brasileirão.

The red-and-black team continued pressing. Plata was brought down on the edge of the box. De La Cruz took the free kick, and the ball went very close to the goal. In the 17th minute, Ayrton Lucas crossed into the box, Léo Ortiz headed firmly, and Volpi saved Grêmio with two saves. 

As the match progressed, the pace of the opening minutes slowed and became more measured. In the closing stages, Ayrton Lucas handled the ball in the box, and the referee awarded a penalty. Tiago Volpi stepped up to take the penalty, leveling the score at 1-1. Flamengo pushed forward in search of the winning goal, but the draw prevailed at the Maracanã.
