In his final training session before the derby against Vasco on Sunday (August 01.08), coach Rogério Lourenço led a set piece session with the Flamengo team at Gávea. This Saturday (July 31.07), the Flamengo team practiced corners, free kicks, and even penalties. All to be ready for plays that could decide the game if one of the teams makes a defensive mistake.
Rogério began the session with aerial plays, first with corners and then with free kicks from the edge of the box. The session lasted almost an hour, testing both the starting attack and the reserve defense, as well as the reserve attack and the starting defense. In other words, the aerial play was used as a weapon, and the team also demonstrated an awareness of this type of play used by Vasco. Later, some players took penalties and free kicks before the traditional pre-match recreational training session began. One of the standouts of the session was Borja, who trained as a goalkeeper and didn't perform very well.
"I'll give him a two. As a goalkeeper, he's a good striker," joked Leonardo Moura.
With 16 points from 11 matches, Flamengo is in seventh place, level with Avaí and Cruzeiro, who occupy fifth and sixth place, respectively. Internacional, the last member of the top four, has 4. In other words, a combination of results could put Flamengo back in the Libertadores qualifying zone this Sunday. Vasco, meanwhile, has 19 points and is in fourteenth place.
This Sunday's Clássico dos Milhões takes place at 18:30 pm, at Maracanã, and the likely lineup for the Gávea team for the match is Marcelo Lomba, Leonardo Moura, Jean, Ronaldo Angelim and Juan; Correa, Willians, Kleberson and Petkovic; Cristian Borja and Val Baiano.
