\ \ Undefeated in the 2010 Rio Cup, Flamengo will conclude its participation in the first phase of the competition against Friburguense, at the Moça Bonita Stadium, in Bangu, at 16 pm, next Sunday (03.04). And the Rubro-negro da Gávea will go into the match with a team made up of reserve players. Aiming to preserve the squad for the game against Universidad de Chile, next Wednesday (07.04), for the Libertadores, coach Andrade decided not to risk losing any of his athletes to injury.
Previously unsure whether to rest the starters for this match, Andrade decided to field the reserves during the two days off—Monday and Tuesday—he gave the squad. The decision had already been pre-approved by some of the club's starting lineup icons, such as Bruno and Léo Moura.
"After last Sunday's match, I thought a lot about whether or not to rest the players. I also spoke with the coaching staff, and our idea is to rest everyone. This is already well-defined in my mind. Now is not the time to take risks, since we've already qualified for the Rio Cup. I see no reason for that. We'll be playing on an uneven pitch, and if someone were to have a problem, the pressure would be immense. Imagine if Adriano gets injured and can't play on Wednesday? Our most important game is against Universidad de Chile in the Copa Libertadores," said Andrade, who still doesn't know which team he will field.
Good performance
Flamengo's reserves proved they can handle the job in the State Championship. Last Thursday (25.03), led by Andrade's assistant coach, Marcelo Salles, the players who are not used as much in the starting lineup played against Brasília FC, in Brasília, and won 3-0 in the friendly.
Denis Marques, Camacho and Carlyle scored the goals for Flamengo, who dominated the entire match against the combined team.
"The players who had already been working with us as professionals performed well in this match, as did the youngsters," said Salles, who started the game with the following lineup: Paulo Victor, Galhardo, Romulo, Henrique, and Anderson; Lenon, Leo Medeiros, Camacho, and Gil; Denis Marques and Bruno Mezenga. Midfielders Saba and Eliabe, as well as forward Carlyle, came on during the friendly.
Bad memory
The last time Flamengo played at the Proletário Guilherme da Silveira Stadium, known as Moça Bonita, in Bangu, they were defeated by Madureira. The match, held in 2007, ended 4-1 in favor of the suburban Tricolor, but the red-and-black team still won the state championship that year, beginning their fifth consecutive victory.\ \
