Lucas Silva and Pepê scored in the 2-0 victory and were emotional during the celebration.

A team of youngsters making their debut in 2018. And a debut fit for seasoned veterans. With a goal in each half, Flamengo defeated Volta Redonda 2-0 at the Raulino de Oliveira stadium on Wednesday night, opening the 2018 season with three points. Lucas Silva, in the first half, and Pepê, in the second, were responsible for the goals in Paulo César Carpegiani's first match in charge since his return to Flamengo. The Rubro-Negro now leads Group B of the Taça Guanabara and returns to the field on Sunday at 20:15 PM at Ilha do Urubu against Cabofriense.

The game
Flamengo didn't care about age differences, experience, or any other factor and focused on playing football. They went on the attack against Volta Redonda from the start and created the best chances. Just four minutes in, Lucas Silva received a pass on the right, entered the area and shot, forcing a good save from goalkeeper Douglas Borges. A minute later, Klebinho shot from outside the box and the ball grazed the post. The pace didn't slow down, and Volta Redonda tried to counter-attack, opening up spaces. At 30 minutes, Wendel went one-on-one with Douglas, but didn't score. At 34 minutes, however, there was no stopping them.
The home team launched an attack. Lucas Silva picked up the ball in midfield and set up the counter-attack. He sprinted the entire length of the field to the opponent's penalty area, where he unleashed a beautiful right-footed shot and opened the scoring, marking his first goal for Flamengo's professional team, complete with tears in his celebration.
Volta Redonda pressed forward, but were thwarted by a brilliant save from Gabriel, who stopped a close-range shot from Dija Baiano in the 44th minute. And Flamengo went into halftime with the lead.
The second half began with a good chance for Volta Redonda. Marcelo took a free kick just outside the box and the ball hit the crossbar. The response took four minutes. And what a response! Wendel launched a counter-attack and passed to Pepê. The number 10 unleashed a powerful shot from distance, finding the top corner and giving Douglas no chance to save. Flamengo extended their lead early in the second half.
Without letting the pace drop, Carpegiani's team maintained control of the match, aware of the advantage they had gained. The coach made two substitutions at once. Hugo Moura and Vitor Gabriel came on for Pepê and Wendel, respectively. Ten minutes later, another change, Matheus Dantas replacing Kleber. A minute later, Jean Lucas set up Hugo Moura, who shot from distance, but the ball went just wide. And Carpegiani made another change, bringing on Jajá for Jean Lucas.
In the final minutes, Hugo had another chance to score, but it wasn't enough. Flamengo started 2018 with a victory.
