Flamengo beat Cuiabá 2-1, in Mato Grosso, in the thirty-first round of the Brazilian Championship. With the result on Saturday night (8), the red-black team reached 52 points in the competition and rose, partially, to third place in the table.
After a lackluster first half for both teams, coach Dorival Júnior brought Matheus França into the game and saw results. The youngster's introduction shook up the team's structure, and Flamengo opened the scoring early in the second half. Marinho then conceded and converted a penalty. In the final play of the match, Rafael Gava sealed the victory: 2-1.
The game
The match started evenly. Mais Querido's first chance came after a corner kick from Everton Cebolinha; Pablo rose high and headed the ball firmly. The ball just went wide.
Flamengo reached the baseline with Victor Hugo; the youngster crossed into the box and Mateusão headed it back, Vidal arrived with a shot, and the ball went out dangerously. A good chance for Mengão.
Next, Cebolinha went forward on the left and made a beautiful individual play; he shot hard and forced a good save from the opposing goalkeeper.
In the final stretch of the first half, Flamengo had a good opportunity to counterattack, but Mateusão was unable to continue the play.
The teams took the partial draw to the locker rooms.
During halftime, coach Dorival Júnior made structural changes to the team. Matheus França's introduction in Mateusão's place returned Victor Hugo to the position the youngster had been playing; and it soon paid off.
Flamengo and Cuiabá traded blows. The red-and-black attack began to find space. Santos was always very confident when challenged.
As the game heated up, Mengão opened the scoring. Cebolinha made a run down the left and crossed into the box. Victor Hugo tried to finish, but the ball fell to Matheus França, who pushed it in: 1-0.
Ayrton Lucas then crossed, and Marinho was tackled from behind. The referee awarded a penalty. Marinho himself took the penalty with skill, extending the lead at Arena Pantanal to 2-0.
Flamengo continued to attack, primarily with Everton Cebolinha and Matheus França, looking to increase their lead. In the final play of the match, Cuiabá pulled one back through Rafael Gava, giving the final score: 2-1.
