In their second match against the main favorites for the 2009 State Championship title, Flamengo suffered their second defeat. After falling to Petrópolis 4-3, coach Cid Escarlate's team traveled to Cabo Frio, where they won the competition last year, and returned with an unexpected thrashing from the Lakes Region: 4-1. More lopsided than expected, the scoreline didn't reflect the reality of the game. Even playing away from home, Flamengo pressed, created the best chances, but failed to capitalize on them and ended up with their third negative result in the competition. This result displeased the Flamengo players. "The team was playing better when they conceded the first two goals. It's very frustrating, but unfortunately, it happens. In 2008 we also had setbacks and ended up champions, but we can't dwell on that. We have to train hard, dedicate ourselves every day, and seek recovery in the second half of the season," said Flamengo's number 10, Diego Panazio. There's still time to recover. With the first round over, Flamengo begins the second round aiming to recover lost points, taking advantage of the chance to play at the Hélio Maurício Gymnasium, with the support of the fans, against the strong teams of Petrópolis and Cabo Frio. “I believe there are a number of factors. The team hadn't played together for a while, we're playing more on larger courts and we've been training on a small court... But none of that is an excuse. Now it's time to lift our heads and work to perform better in the second round. We still have seven games. Against the favorites we play at home, so we do have a chance to get those points,” said winger Michel Marques, who played the full 40 minutes of the game against Cabo Frio. Even with the two bad results, Flamengo remains in the qualifying zone for the semifinals. With three wins, one draw and three losses in the first round, the Rubro-Negro is in third place in the State Championship, with 10 points. Petrópolis is in the lead and Cabo Frio is in second place. The next match will be against the Drogarias do Povo team on October 18th at 11:00 AM in the Cabo Frio municipal gymnasium.
