2007 Octávio Pinto Guimarães Cup. It was in the final of this competition, against Fluminense, that Flamengo's youth team had the last opportunity to shout "championship." Almost three years have passed since then, and now, a new generation hopes to end the drought, which is unusual in Gávea. And the young Flamengo players have a great chance to do so this Sunday (August 01.08). Flamengo will play the Eurofarma Super Cup against Santos at noon at Arena Barueri, with live coverage on SporTV.
Left-back Jorbison, who already has two youth championships and a Brazilian professional title under his belt, won last year, dreams of victory not only to end the drought but also to return with high morale and rejoin Flamengo's main squad next week.
"For all of us here, this title is very important. We know we've gone almost three years without winning a title, and for a club like Flamengo, this isn't normal. Thank God, we're playing well and beautifully, which gives us great confidence for the grand final. I'm sure this title coming will boost our morale in the professional team as well," he said.
Winning an international competition featuring teams from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Porto, and Spain is a major achievement for the boys led by coach Paulo Henrique. And they know it. Supporter Eliabe, who has been one of Flamengo's standout players and earned a starting spot in the semifinal against Sevilla, hopes to live up to the praise he's been receiving and help the team win the title.
"I've been working to be a starter and, fortunately, my time has come. It's a wonderful feeling; it's indescribable to be a champion with my favorite team and I hope to feel that again on Sunday," he said.
Flamengo should enter the field with Cesar, Galhardo, China, Marlon and Jorbison; Maycon, João Vitor, Guilherme and Ricardinho; Eliabe and Dudu.
