Gil wants to revitalize his career in 2010
Striker dreams of more opportunities and achievements this season
By From the team at Flamengo's official website - inGilberto Ribeiro Gonçalves arrived at Flamengo in mid-2009, but after a long period of inactivity, he didn't get many opportunities. He only came on for one match during Flamengo's sixth-championship campaign. But this year, the striker promises to do much more for the red-and-blacks. Working hard in the preseason, Gil could start in the team's Campeonato Carioca debut on Sunday against Caxias.
Gil's departure from the club was speculated by the press, but he ended up being retained for 2010. This motivated the player, who had his best run in the early 2000s while wearing the Corinthians jersey. The striker arrived at Flamengo to become another attacking option, but he hasn't established himself and is aware that he needs to prove his worth this season.
"Not just any player gets the chance to play for Flamengo. It's a sign that they've invested in me based on my past performance, and I need to live up to that. Last year, I barely played; I was below my best physical condition, and everyone knows that, but I want to change that in 2010. I've been very well received here, and I want to create a new situation for my career. Flamengo will compete in important competitions, and I'll put my skills to work to help. The club has many goals, and I want to be a part of this project in the best way possible," said Gil.
The player knows how important this year is for Flamengo. The Copa Libertadores is seen as a priority by everyone, and it's no different for Gil. Hoping to get an opportunity, he assures he's ready to help the group, regardless of the position coach Andrade chooses to play him in, even as a replacement for Petkovic.
"Andrade hasn't told me about positioning yet, but I know I have the chance to play in a different role due to Pet's absence. I've always played more on the left side, like Zé Roberto did, but it's Andrade who decides. I'm preparing to help in the best way possible. I have different characteristics than Pet; he controls the game better, has more vision, and I'm more of a speedy player. I need to be intelligent to help the team and not feel the pressure so much," he explained.
The center forward is highly anticipated to step onto the field. Despite the limited preseason training, Gil believes the team will be well prepared for its debut in the Campeonato Carioca.
"We're looking forward to playing, training soon, and putting together a team, but we know we need to get our physical foundation in place first. The work has been going really well, and I think we'll be in good shape for the debut, despite the short time. It's also good to have this feeling of uncertainty for those who play, because everyone ends up being motivated in the same way," he concluded.
