Flamengo failed to bid farewell to Maracanã with a victory this Sunday (September 05.09th). The Red-Blacks drew with Santos, despite playing a far superior match, and the players lamented leaving the World's Biggest Stadium with just one more point in the standings. In their last five games, the team has only earned two points, and they know that this is far too little for a team aiming to defend their national title.
Left-back Juan, in a nutshell, summed up the team's sentiment after the match. According to him, the draw felt, in a way, like a defeat, because the group was so confident in seeking a positive result to kick off the championship. However, the number 6 emphasizes that we can't let our heads drop at this point. The best way to overcome this bad patch is through hard work.
"It wasn't our goal. But we can't get discouraged," he commented.
Renato agrees. He started as a starter and was substituted during the second half. He says the farewell didn't end up being the way Flamengo would have liked, but that now is the time to unite, continue believing in the work, and strive for victories in the upcoming matches.
"The farewell wasn't the way we would have liked, but now it's time to lift our heads and look for results in the next matches," he said.
This Monday (06.09), the red-blacks will return in the afternoon at Gávea. On Tuesday (07.09), the team will train again in the morning and travel to São Paulo, where they will face the tricolor team.
