Flamengo's youth team traveled to Minas Gerais, where they are competing in the Belo Horizonte Under-20 Football Cup. However, coach Paulo Henrique is without three of his key players for the competition. In addition to Diego Maurício, who even came on in the last two Brazilian Championship matches, right-back Galhardo and midfielder Saba also stayed in Rio de Janeiro to train with the senior team.
Galhardo has already played for the first team, during the sixth championship campaign in 2009, but believes that every opportunity to show his worth in the first team is crucial for his future at the club.
"It's always good to train with them. Of course, the Taça BH is an important championship and it would be great to play in it, but training with the professional team is always a privilege," he said.
Midfielder Saba, who played a friendly with the senior squad earlier this year in Brasília, was promoted to the senior squad in January and completed preseason training in Porto Feliz with the rest of the squad. He then returned to training with the youth squad and now has another chance to impress coach Rogério Lourenço, who has known him since the youth academy.
"I'm very happy with these first training sessions with the professionals after the pre-season," he commented.
Thursday's training session was a regeneration session for the starters from the match against Fluminense, held in the gym, with the exception of Rômulo and Vinícius Pacheco, who were substituted at halftime. They trained with the reserves and non-match-related players in a training session on a reduced-size field. On Friday, the team will rejoin the Gávea stadium at 15 p.m.
