Many names from the generation that won the 2007 Rio de Janeiro youth championship are now part of Flamengo's professional squad. Some are even playing regularly, like Fabrício and Lenon, as well as Welinton, who is registered for the Libertadores. And they all have one thing in common: they worked with Rogério Lourenço in the youth team.
Midfielder Lenon spoke to the club's official website team and didn't hide his happiness at Rogério's success.
"Changing coaches is a normal thing in football, but I'm very happy for Rogério. He's a great coach, he worked very well with our youth team and will show his work in the professional ranks. This only enhances the youth divisions," he said.
The midfielder also revealed that the entire group embraced the new coach and promised to give a lot of effort in the match against Corinthians on Wednesday.
"The whole group is behind Rogério, just as they were with Andrade. The team talked and showed they're behind him. Whoever plays will certainly do their best on Wednesday to get the win," he said.
Although pleased with the athletes' recognition, the coach doesn't take sole responsibility for developing the players. Quite the contrary. He shares the credit with the other coaches who also work in Flamengo's youth academy.
"It's gratifying to see players who were once under your supervision at the youth level now in the professional ranks, but I don't like to say I've developed a player. I think the good work is done by all the youth coaches, who are of great quality and competence. From futsal onwards, even in the pre-youth age group, the boys are very well trained," he added.
