Rômulo's arrival on the team and the confidence of coach Rogério Lourenço have restored Juan to a key role in Flamengo's attacking system. Considered one of the best players in the country at his position since arriving at Gávea in 2006, the full-back has experienced ups and downs at the club and finds himself very close to his best performance in another decisive stretch for the Rubro-Negro.
With great consistency in recent matches, Juan has been showing the kind of football fans expect from him, and he credits this to the team's style of play. According to him, the three-man midfield facilitates both his and Leonardo Moura's attacking runs.
"This formation we're playing really frees me up a bit and allows me to play in a way that allows me to perform better. I'm used to playing like this, offensively, and I hope it works out again against Universidad de Chile," he said.
The number 6 shirt was on the field in both matches against "La U" in the first phase of the Libertadores and knows that the team needs to improve in some aspects to achieve better results than those in the group stage of the competition.
"I think we need to have a different attitude. We need to play at our limit the whole time, for the entire 90 minutes. With each player giving their all, the team will perform better and we will have a better chance of qualifying," he added.
Coach Rogério Lourenço explains the importance of the player, who can get more involved in attacking and says he will seek to neutralize the opponent's strengths.
"We'll play more or less like we did against Corinthians in the second half. With Kleberson in the middle, giving more freedom to Juan, who will be a little further forward. Our team is playing this formation and we won't mess around with the marking. We'll go in looking to neutralize Universidad de Chile's strengths, but without losing our own," he revealed.
Of the current squad, Juan is one of the players who has worn the Flamengo shirt the most: he has played 221 games, scored 30 goals and provided 62 assists.
