The Flamengo-Botafogo derby brings back many memories for both Flamengo and Botafogo players in recent years. They were tight matches, title deciders... And one of the matches that ended up not being so decisive was unforgettable for one player in particular. It was on July 14th of this year, in the first round of the Brasileirão after the break for the World Cup. Goalkeeper Marcelo Lomba was finally taking over as Flamengo's starting goalkeeper.
From a young age at Gávea, he was one step closer to realizing the dream of any young player raised at the club: becoming a starter in the professional squad. Despite high expectations and distrust, he performed well, the team won 1-0, and he remembers that match fondly.
"It was a special game for me, for sure. A classic, with a win and without conceding a goal. It was a great debut. It was a time when a lot of people were still suspicious of me, and the fans themselves didn't know me well, so it was important to play a good game, leave the field with a win and start a streak that was important for us, where we went many games without conceding a goal and still had the best defense of the first half of the season," he said.
Lomba hopes these good memories will be a harbinger of another positive result. This Saturday, he wants Flamengo to not only beat Botafogo but also start a string of new victories to try and climb the table.
"I hope we can repeat that now. That we not only beat Botafogo, but also manage to get positive results to get out of the bottom of the table once and for all. Flamengo has to fight for bigger things in the championship. We still have some time to improve our situation and we'll do everything we can to do so," he added.
