Working with big stars is nothing new for Vanderlei Luxemburgo. Who doesn't remember 1995, when Romário, recently elected the best player in the world, came to play for Flamengo? The coach was Luxa. And the Galácticos of Real Madrid, with Ronaldo, Figo, Zidane and company? The coach was also Luxa. Therefore, managing Ronaldinho at Flamengo shouldn't be a problem for the coach.
"The biggest signing in Brazilian football," in Vanderlei's words, Ronaldinho arrives to wear the number 10 jersey and assume the responsibility of being a leader. In marketing, charisma, and, of course, talent on the field – which is what matters most, according to the coach.
"It was the biggest signing in Brazilian football, as a project. He's a huge star in world football, and Flamengo demonstrated strength and greatness. He worked well and showed his determination to honor his commitments. Of course, a name like Ronaldo's always attracts partners, but he's not here to be a marketing man. He's here to play football. None of this matters if we don't get results, and we know that," analyzed the coach, who took the opportunity to highlight the strength of the entire Flamengo group.
"My conduct is always professional. My behavior doesn't change. I'm happy with what Flamengo is doing. I'm not just happy because of Ronaldo. I'm happy because of Angelim, because of David... I'm happy with the whole squad. I'm analyzing the overall picture and I'm satisfied with what we're putting together for the season. His arrival shows our ambition," he observed.
Luxa now wants to talk to Ronaldinho, find out what the star's plans are for these four years of his contract, and put together a good strategy for both the player and the club, which will be competing in four competitions in 2011 alone. The coach shows confidence in R10's talent and dreams of many achievements alongside the player.
"When you're young, you have the issue of youth, but personality and character don't change. Ronaldinho is no longer a boy, he's a different player today, but he can't lose sight of his goals. We have to talk to Ronaldo to understand his objectives at the club and then his personal proposal. Based on everything he's already achieved and what I know of him, I believe he wants to play in another World Cup. I know that, as a key player for the team, he can help Flamengo achieve a lot," he concluded.
