Flamengo confirmed, in the early hours of this Thursday (December 09.12th), its participation in the 2011 Copa Sudamericana. With this, the team will compete in four different competitions next season. And if it depends on the will of the Flamengo players, they will fight for the titles in all of them: Campeonato Carioca, Copa do Brasil, Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa Sudamericana itself.
Chilean Maldonado is one of those players. Experienced, with an enviable resume, he wants more trophies for his shelf, which already includes a Chilean Championship, four São Paulo State Championships, a Rio-São Paulo Tournament, two Minas Gerais State Championships, two Brazilian Championships, and a Copa do Brasil. After the triple crown (Minas Gerais State Championship, Brazilian Championship, and Copa do Brasil) with Cruzeiro in 2003, he dreams of the quadruple with Flamengo in 2011.
"Who knows? It would be wonderful. I have great faith in Flamengo's work for next year. Luxemburgo is experienced, he knows how to build winning teams, and Flamengo is a club accustomed to winning, accustomed to fighting for great achievements. I'm sure 2011 will be better than 2010. We will enter every tournament we compete in to win," he said.
Maldonado arrived at Flamengo in August 2009, with the mission of fixing the team's midfield. He performed very well and is considered by everyone to be a key player in winning the sixth championship that year. The midfielder, who turns 31 on the day of Flamengo's return to training, January 3rd, renewed his contract until 2012 and is one of Vanderlei Luxemburgo's trusted players for the next season.
"Maldonado is the most tactical player I've ever worked with. I coached him at Santos and Cruzeiro. I know very well how he plays. He doesn't stand out much to the fans, but he does a lot on the field. He knows how to position himself, where the ball is, and he will be important in the current squad. Just look at what he did last year when he fixed the Flamengo team," said the coach.
The Flamengo squad is on vacation and will return on January 3rd to begin their pre-season training, focusing on the challenges of next year.
