Marking yes, violence no

Rogério Lourenço wants the team to steal balls without committing fouls in the classic

By - in
A classic is typically a highly contested, intense game where nerves are on edge. A Flamengo vs. Vasco match is always steeped in rivalry, which leads some players to confuse race with violence on the field. But former defender and current Rubro-Negro coach Rogério Lourenço has already spoken to his players about this.

According to him, his team will do its best to have a strong defensive system, without giving space to Vasco's attack, but committing few fouls.

"Fouls are part of the game, now what I advise the players is that they should try to win the ball back as much as possible without committing fouls," he said.

Expecting a big game, Rogério Lourenço knows his defense's task won't be easy. Vasco will debut some highly-rated reinforcements in its attack, and Rogério knows the team needs to be vigilant in the derby.

"Regardless of the players, it's always a classic. Vasco is restructuring, and their quality is beyond comment. We have to pay attention to the formation, and there's still that question of how it will play out. Players take care of themselves and prepare well, as happened here at Flamengo. The reinforcements won't be 100%, but we can't underestimate them," he concluded.

Flamengo and Vasco face each other next Sunday (01.08), at 18:30 pm, at Maracanã. The match is valid for the 12th round of the 2010 Brasileirão.
