Mauricio Barbieri praises the importance of beating Chapecoense
Rubro-Negro coach spoke to the press after the match
By Nathan Mello - inFlamengo found its way back to victory in the Brazilian Championship by defeating Chapecoense 2-0, with goals from Renê and Diego, on Saturday night (08), at Maracanã. After the match, coach Maurício Barbieri gave a press conference and spoke about the result that keeps Fla at the top of the table.
"Without a doubt, it was a very important victory. We were coming off poor results, we didn't play bad matches, but we ended up coming away with poor results. Today's victory keeps us at the top of the table. Regarding Arão, he's coming off a good performance against Inter. These are options we'll win over. I'm very pleased with his performance, and Flamengo has everything to gain from his good form."
"We hadn't won in three games in the Brazilian Championship. Halfway through, we played Cruzeiro and won. The conversation we had with the players was that we had to keep believing in what we were doing. We needed to be more focused at the back and calm up front to finish plays well and score goals. We finished today's game without conceding a goal. And the team performed very well and is on the rise," concluded the Rubro-Negro coach.
Barbieri also commented on Wilian Arão's performance in the match. For the coach, the midfielder's recent performances make him a welcome addition to the team this season.
"We know Arão has that ability. Last year, he was one of the best disarming players. We know his potential; he played well and demonstrated his worth. I'm happy to gain another important option for the rest of the season."
Tonight's game was marked by Berrío's return to the field, but also by the tribute the squad paid to defender Juan, who was seriously injured and is unlikely to play again in 2018.
"I'm happy with Berrío's return; everyone in the locker room celebrated wildly. This return reinforces the good work CEP has been doing. Despite his return, we had to miss Juan, a leader and a key figure. He won't be able to help us on the field in the coming weeks, but off it, he'll certainly continue to help us. We dedicate this victory to him. More than an exceptional athlete, he's a fantastic human being."
Mais Querido's next match will be against Corinthians on Wednesday (12), at Maracanã, at 21:45 pm, for the first match of the Copa do Brasil semi-final.
