With a full house for the classic between the two biggest fan bases in Brazil, Flamengo took advantage of the Nation's momentum and thrashed Corinthians 4-0 on Sunday afternoon (27), at Maracanã, in the sixth round of the Brasileirão, taking the lead in the championship with 14 points. Cebolinha, Arrascaeta and Pedro (twice) scored the goals that gave Mengão its fourth victory in the competition.

Now, Mengão will make its debut in the Copa do Brasil, facing Botafogo-PB on Thursday (1), at Castelão (MA). It is the beginning of the journey in search of the sixth championship of the competition. 

The game

The ball started rolling at the Maracanã Stadium, and Flamengo immediately went in search of the first goal, which came just four minutes in. Gerson won the challenge and passed to Arrascaeta, who found Cebolinha. The number 11 took advantage of the space, drove the ball to the edge of the box, and slotted it into Hugo's left corner to open the scoring: 1-0. 

With the advantage, Mengão continued to press Corinthians in search of a second goal, which Pedro narrowly missed. Six minutes in, Arrascaeta took a corner kick; the defender slipped on the ball, and the number 9 rose to head the ball, sending it against the post. As time wore on, Corinthians leveled the playing field and also threatened the red-and-black goal, forcing Rossi into a great save in the 20th minute. 

Mengão extended their lead in the 33rd minute with another beautiful goal from Gávea's number 10! Erick Pulgar passed to Pedro, who set up Arrascaeta, who advanced unmarked to the edge of the box and fired a shot into the corner of Hugo's net. Hugo stretched out but couldn't prevent the red-and-blacks' second goal: 2-0. 

Flamengo scored the third goal shortly after. Hugo Souza came out of the gate, but Pedro capitalized on the gift and sent the ball into the back of the net, sending the nation into a frenzy at the Maracanã stadium! The Flamengo fans even mocked the opposing goalkeeper by chanting, "Hugo, Hugo!" The first half ended 3-0, not to mention the Mengão's stunner on the field!

The second half had barely begun when Arrascaeta unleashed a shot that exploded against the crossbar. Yet another mistake by the Corinthians defense when trying to build up a lead. The game continued as it had in the first half, with Flamengo constantly attacking and Corinthians trying to escape on the counterattack. 

In the 14th minute, De La Cruz made a beautiful play through the middle, exchanged passes with Arrascaeta, burst into the box, exchanged passes with Pedro again, and struck first time. Hugo Souza palmed the ball away for a corner. Filipe Luís's first substitution was to bring on Luiz Araújo for Cebolinha, who scored the first goal. 

Around the 30th minute, after reviewing the VAR, the referee awarded a penalty by Igor Coronado on Arrascaeta. Pedro took the penalty and scored Mengão's fourth goal, the number 9's second of the match. In the final minutes, Mengão controlled the result and left the field with a rout and provisional lead in the Brasileirão.
