Mengão thrashes Madureira 5-1 and regains the lead in the Cariocão
Gabigol (2), Gerson, Diego and Arrascaeta scored the goals in the red-black victory
By Romulo Paranhos - inIn the eighth round of the Cariocão, Flamengo had a great performance and beat Madureira 5-1 on Monday night (05), at the Raulino de Oliveira stadium, in Volta Redonda. Mengão's goals were scored by Gabigol (2), Gerson, Diego and Arrascaeta. With the rout, Rubro-Negro retook the lead in the championship with 19 points.
The game
Flamengo started the first half pressing Madureira, creating two scoring opportunities within less than five minutes. In the 10th minute, Everton Ribeiro received the ball at the edge of the box, cut inside, and shot over the bar. Flamengo then hit the post twice, a header from Bruno Henrique and a cross-shot from Diego.
In the 16th minute, Bruno Henrique was brought down by Breno inside the box, and the referee awarded a penalty. Gabigol simply displaced the goalkeeper to open the scoring: 1-0. After the timeout, Mengão doubled the lead! Filipe Luís crossed into the box, the ball fell to Gerson, who turned and hit a cross into the corner: 2-0.
The Mais Querido continued to impose its rhythm and quickly scored the third goal. Following a corner, Rodrigo Caio headed the ball, but the goalkeeper saved it. Gabigol fired a low shot from the rebound to make it 3-0. And there was still time for another! In the 43rd minute, Isla sent a low cross into the box, and Diego struck first time. The ball deflected off the defense before going in: 4-0.
Rubro-Negro returned for the second half with the same intensity, pressing Madureira's ball out. In the 12th minute, Tricolor Suburbano reduced the deficit with Luiz Paulo, who headed in a corner kick: 4-1. Mengão didn't let it go and scored their fifth goal. In the 19th minute, Gerson passed to Arrascaeta on the left; the Uruguayan controlled the ball, cut inside, and fired it into the goalkeeper's right corner: 5-1.
Despite a comfortable lead, the red-and-black team continued to create good chances in attack. In the 44th minute, Rodrigo Muniz received the ball at the edge of the box and shot firmly, but the goalkeeper made a good save. Dominant throughout the match, Mengão put in another excellent performance, adding three more points to the standings and reclaiming the top spot in the competition.
Next appointment
Rubro-Negro returns to the field next Sunday (11) to face Palmeiras, at 11 am, at the Mané Garrincha stadium, in Brasília. The clash is worth the title of the Brazilian Super Cup.
