In modern football, it's often said that winning major titles requires a strong squad. That's what Flamengo aims to prove this Sunday at 16 p.m. in Moça Bonita. Coach Andrade has fielded a reserve team to conclude the club's participation in the Taça Rio qualifying round against Friburguense.
With the team already guaranteed a spot in next weekend's semifinals, the club's manager wants to monitor the players who haven't been playing to see if he can count on them for the season's most important matches. Dênis Marques, for example, is one who should get more opportunities.
"Denis Marques had more opportunities last year than Gil, but he didn't really improve. This year, he's been doing well in training and is showing that he can help us. If we don't have Adriano or Love, from what I'm seeing, he could be a solution," he explained.
A draw would guarantee Flamengo first place in Group A of this second round, which the Red-Blacks still contest with Fluminense, but Andrade isn't thinking about leaving Moça Bonita with just one point. Even if that result also favors their opponent, who is fighting relegation.
"Flamengo's situation is more comfortable, but we're going into the game to win and show that we can not only win the game, but also go further in the championship. If we draw, we'll be happy too, but that's not our mindset," he said.
Depending on the clubs' historical record, the team from Gávea will confirm its top spot in the group without much trouble. After all, Friburguense has never beaten Flamengo in its history. In 25 matches between the two teams, the team has won 22 times and drawn only three times.
