Coach Vanderlei Luxembugo knows Flamengo well. He's a fan, a former player, and is in his third stint as coach of the red-and-black club. Therefore, he's familiar with the history and traditions of Brazil's Most Beloved and makes a point of passing them on to his players. That was the case in the match against Guarani, and it will be the case whenever possible.
In the match against Bugre, the coach motivated the players by recalling the club's greatest achievements over the past 115 years. According to him, this type of talk makes a difference at a time when the psychological aspect is as important as the tactical one.
"That's part of it, motivation has to be there, companies always give motivational talks and I think that's important, because it was a decisive game and that's part of the process," he said.
Luxa, however, warns that Flamengo's tradition speaks for itself and that there's no need to constantly remind Flamengo that the Rubro-Negro is a great team and should always be fighting for the top of the table. After all, everyone already knows that.
"In that video (motivational, in the game against Guarani) I showed the players what Flamengo represents, but there's no need to keep reminding them. Back in the day, we had Zico at Flamengo and Roberto Dinamite at Vasco, who stayed at their clubs for a long time. Today, players stay for two years and don't care about kissing the badge," he added.
