A lot of work goes into preventing goals from aerial balls.
Goals have started flowing again, and now Flamengo's focus is on regaining the best defensive record.

In the first half of the Brazilian Championship, Flamengo stood out for conceding few goals. The second half of the competition arrived, and that average wasn't maintained. In contrast, the goals, which had been coming in homeopathic doses, started happening more frequently again. With time to work until the end of the championship, the goal is to achieve balance.
Marcelo Lomba took over as Flamengo's goalkeeper mid-season and knows very well how important it is to be effective on set pieces, both defensively and offensively.
"Nowadays, set pieces decide many games. Everyone uses those crosses to the near post a lot, hoping someone will deflect them. We use them too. The intention now is to work on improving our marking on those plays. We have time, and Vanderlei has already talked to us about getting everything right. We're going to improve," explained Marcelo Lomba, demanding more attention from himself and all the other players.
"Nobody is happy to concede goals. We were the best defense in the championship and we're no longer. In a decisive moment like this, we have to show more focus. Everyone has to be very well prepared to avoid conceding goals," said Lomba.
And coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is a fundamental part of Flamengo's work in no longer making mistakes on aerial balls. He has already passed on to the players his strategies against this play, which has been deadly against Flamengo.
"Vanderlei has a particular way of marking that play. He started implementing it and the team will improve. Inside the area, everyone has to be very attentive. Avaí's team was very tall and needed more attention to the men who were coming in. We have to be 100% focused," concluded the Flamengo goalkeeper.
