In search of the 35th state title, Flamengo debuts in 2018 against Volta Redonda
The match marks Paulo César Carpegiani's return to the club for his third spell.

It's time to catch up. Flamengo finally returns to the field in 2018, in its first official match of the season. The State Championship debut will be against Volta Redonda, at Raulino de Oliveira Stadium, at 21:45 pm. When the ball rolls, Flamengo will be in contention to win its 35th state title and its 20th Guanabara Cup. It holds all-time records in both.

Under new command
Flamengo has a new coach. Paulo César Carpegiani takes over the team for the third time in his career, following the departure of Reinaldo Rueda. During his first stint, Carpegiani won the World Cup, the Copa Libertadores, and the Carioca Championship in 1981, and the Brazilian Championship in 1982. He left to "see the world" and returned in 2000. Now, Carpegiani returns to Flamengo on the verge of another Copa Libertadores.
Cast
Since most of the professionals only returned to work on the 14th, the debuting team will be primarily made up of youngsters from the youth academy. Some athletes were playing in the São Paulo Junior Football Cup, while others had already started the year preparing for the competition. Over the next few days, professionals who recently returned from vacation will join the team.
Unbeaten
Flamengo is the current state champion and has not lost in the competition since 2016. Undefeated champion in 2017 for the sixth time, Mengão defends its unbeaten record in the competition that begins this Wednesday against a rival against whom it has a large advantage in its history.
Last confrontation
Flamengo and Volta Redonda faced off in the 2017 State Championship, and the match ended in a draw. Felipe Vizeu scored for Flamengo, which had a mix of young players and the starting lineup. Watch Vizeu's goal in that 1-1 draw at the Raulino de Oliveira stadium on FlaTV.

In the State Championship, the two teams have met 60 times, with 46 wins for Flamengo and five for Voltaço. Flamengo scored 128 goals and conceded 40. Counting all matches, there were 67 duels, with 50 wins for Flamengo, 11 draws, and six for their rivals, in addition to 139 goals for Rio and 43 for the team from the Steel City.
Flamengo's biggest win over Volta Redonda happened in the 70s: Flamengo 7-1 at Maracanã, on 26/05/77 for the Campeonato Carioca, goals by Luisinho Lemos (three), Zico (two), Carpegiani and Osni, discounting Flecha, for Voltaço. Flamengo's most recent win over Voltaço happened in 1997, on 13/02/97, winning 5-1 at Gávea with three goals by Romário.
