In the farewell to Ilha in 2017, Flamengo receives Santos in a direct duel for the Libertadores

There were 17 games. Thirteen wins, two draws, and only two losses. This was Flamengo's record playing at Ilha do Urubu, its home in 2017. This Sunday, against Santos, at 19 p.m., the Mais Querido bids farewell to the stadium that hosted it this year and plays its last match in Rio de Janeiro, in the Brazilian Championship. The game is part of the 37th round of the national championship and, beyond the competition itself, is crucial for both teams as they vie for a direct spot in the 2018 Copa Libertadores.

If Flamengo beats Santos, their spot will be very close to being secured. If Palmeiras defeats Botafogo in Monday's game, the score will be closed, and their spot in the group stage will be sealed. They will have 56 points, compared to their Rio de Janeiro rival's maximum of 55. Atlético Mineiro and Vasco could still reach 56 with two wins, but they would equal the number of wins and would need to improve on a goal difference of nine (Atlético) and twenty (Vasco).
With a direct spot in mind, Flamengo trained after Thursday's victory over Junior Barranquilla, fully focused on the match against Santos. Defender Juan, who scored on Thursday and tied Junior Baiano as Flamengo's all-time leading scorer with 32 goals, commented on Sunday's national derby.
"It's a goal we started way back in the Brazilian Championship. We've been very inconsistent and criticized, but we're close to securing our place in the Libertadores. It will be a very difficult game because Santos has a very qualified team," said the Rubro-Negro's most experienced player.
