"I don't want to hear proposals from anywhere"

Still young, Diego Maurício focuses his efforts on Flamengo even after being called up to the U-20 team

An opportunity to play in a major tournament with the Brazilian U-20 team is a golden opportunity. Diego Maurício knows this. It's also a chance to showcase his football to the world. European clubs will, of course, be eyeing the U-20 South American Championship, seeking new talent. But Diego isn't having any of that. According to him, his focus for 2011 and "the next 20 years" is Flamengo.

"If Flamengo wants, I'll stay here for the next 20 years. I don't want to hear offers from anywhere," he assured.

Diego was called up by coach Ney Franco to join the group representing Brazil in the competition, which will be held in Peru in January. He will report to Granja Comary on the 13th, along with teammate Galhardo. There's a strong possibility that he will form a Brazilian attacking duo with Santos' Neymar, a player with whom he hopes to have a great relationship.

"I don't know Neymar, but I think there's a lot to learn from him, as he's already an important player in football. We'll just have to wait and see," he observed.

Before that, however, it's time for concentration and hard work wearing the red-and-black jersey. After all, next weekend, Flamengo faces Santos in the final round of the Brasileirão, potentially securing a spot in the 2011 South American Championship.

"I'm happy that everything worked out. Flamengo didn't deserve to be where it is, but football is made up of good and bad moments. Last year, we were champions. This year, we're fighting at the bottom of the table. We have an important game against Santos. With a win, we can reach the South American Cup, our biggest goal. May 2011 be about fighting for titles and bringing joy to the fans," he concluded.
