It is with deep sadness that Clube de Regatas do Flamengo announces that Luis Carlos Tóffoli, known as Gaúcho, passed away this evening around 19 p.m. in São Paulo. The former striker, who turned 52 on March 07th, was battling prostate cancer. His burial will take place in Goiânia early next week.
Revealed in the youth divisions of Mais Querido, Gaúcho played 200 matches with the Manto Sagrado and scored 98 goals. An excellent header, he won the Copa do Brasil (1990), Taça Rio (1991 - scoring the title goal, a 1-0 victory over Botafogo), Campeonato Carioca (1991 - scoring in the 4-2 victory over Fluminense) and Campeonato Brasileiro (1992 - he scored one of the goals in the first game of the finals, 3-0 against Botafogo).
A natural goalscorer, Gaúcho was the top scorer in the Campeonato Carioca in 1990 and 1991, the Copa Libertadores da América and the Supercopa da Libertadores in 1991. Much loved by the nation, the striker was sung in the stands in the adaptation of the samba da Ilha that echoed so many times in Maracanã: "'Oh, how beautiful, another great goal from Gaúcho with his head."
