Official Note - Gonzalo Plata
By Flamengo Communication - inUpon learning of Gonzalo Plata's call-up to represent the Ecuadorian national team at the FIFA World Cup in June, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo noted that the athlete experienced pain in his right knee and was diagnosed with bone edema. Since then, the player has been undergoing treatment with the club's Medical Department, including physiotherapy sessions focused on muscle strengthening and balance.
Flamengo was recently contacted by the Ecuadorian Football Federation regarding the athlete's fitness for a possible call-up. At the time, the club clarified that Gonzalo Plata has not been playing because he is still recovering, and therefore, it would not be safe for him to be used by Ecuador. On May 29th, an isokinetic test revealed that his strength levels were still unsatisfactory for sports.
Alongside these conversations, the club was surprised to learn that, without any prior notice or authorization, a doctor and a physiotherapist from the Ecuadorian Football Federation visited the athlete's home. During their visit, they performed procedures on the affected knee without Flamengo's knowledge, aiming to expedite his return to the field, irresponsibly interfering with the recovery plan established by the club's Medical Department.
Although Flamengo recognizes the obligation to release players to their national teams on FIFA dates, it understands that such actions represent a risk to the athlete's full recovery, which could compromise his participation in the remainder of the season and even his career.
The club regrets the handling of the case by the Ecuadorian Football Federation, which requested that the player's presentation be brought forward, and emphasizes that it always prioritizes the health and well-being of its athletes.
This Friday (30), Clube de Regatas do Flamengo formally sent a letter to the Ecuadorian Football Federation, in which it reinforces the real risk of worsening the injury if the athlete is used.
