Clube de Regatas do Flamengo publicly thanks the Special Stadium Policing Group (GEPE) of the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro (PMERJ) for the work carried out on Sunday afternoon (23), during the match against Corinthians. For many years, GEPE has been carrying out important work in preventing and curbing violence in sports venues in Rio de Janeiro and its operational model is a reference for policing groups in several Brazilian states. This is work that deserves applause and should be supported by all clubs in the country.
Alongside the Rio 2016 Committee, the State Government and other public bodies in Rio de Janeiro, GEPE was an important partner in enabling Flamengo to organize Sunday's match.
Sadly, some GEPE police officers were cowardly attacked by thugs who shouldn't even be called "Corinthians fans" in the stands of the Maracanã stadium, shortly before the start of the game. To these professionals, our sincere respect and solidarity.
In turn, it is also up to Brazilian clubs to work alongside the authorities and provide all possible information to reduce cases of violence. Flamengo is already making itself available to help in this endeavor for peace in football.
