Dr. Sérgio Puppin, cardiologist and nutritionist, as well as Member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Professor of the Brazilian Association of Biomolecular Medicine Course and Professor of Postgraduate Studies at the Universidade Moderna de Lisboa, was a special guest of Vanderlei Luxemburgo and Jose Luiz Runco for a lecture to the players and technical committee of Flamengo, on the evening of this Wednesday (12.01), in Londrina.

Experienced in treating soccer players like Romário and Edmundo, Dr. Sérgio is working directly with a club for the first time in his career. After initially meeting Luxa in Rio, he was willing to collaborate and assist the red-and-black athletes on and off the field. With tips on nutrition, hydration, and personal hygiene, he hopes to help the players—and their families—live healthier lives.

"You need oral nutrient supplementation and, depending on the case, intravenously. Often, the food you eat isn't enough to provide good nutrition because it contains pesticides and other inappropriate substances. Luxemburgo's idea is to create a multidisciplinary team that focuses not only on the physical, organic, and psychological aspects, but also on nutrition. Not only for the present and for performance, but also as a milestone in their lives, something they can take home and to their families. This can change their lives. With healthy habits and the right foods, they will have a better life," he explained.

Wednesday night's talk was just the beginning of a relationship that could be quite beneficial for the players. Dr. Puppin revealed how he met Luxemburgo and also the athletes' own desire to learn more about the subject in an interview with the official website team after the talk.

"I was introduced to Luxemburgo and Dr. Runco, the Flamengo team, to help dispel myths, like the one about eggs, for example, which you can eat normally without any fear of health risks. It was Maurício, a physiotherapist and mutual friend of ours, who ended up facilitating a first meeting in Barra da Tijuca, where we talked, explained the project, and I offered to be a collaborator with Flamengo's medical team. Soon, we will also hold a meeting with the families; the players have already spoken to me to schedule future appointments, and I believe the work can be very successful," he added.
