Saving a penalty, for a goalkeeper, is like scoring a goal for a striker. It's true that the chances are much smaller, and penalties aren't awarded in every match. That makes the moment even more special. And Flamengo goalkeeper Marcelo Lomba experienced this emotion for the first time as a professional last Sunday (August 29.08).
Number 29 saved Guarani's Ricardo Xavier's shot, and as expected, he was thrilled. Before Ricardo went for the ball, Lomba warned, "I'm going to catch it." And he did. He celebrated wildly after the save, a feat that will remain in his career.
"I'm happy. Everyone knows I've been trying to establish myself as a starter for Flamengo, and for me, who's just starting out, saving a penalty like that means a lot," said the number 29, who was only disappointed with the result, which ended up being negative for Flamengo.
"What defines a goalkeeper's career is saving a penalty, winning a title, and having that connection with the fans. I was very happy. Unfortunately, victory slipped away in the end," he explained.
Despite this, he is already ready for another challenge. This Wednesday (01.09), Flamengo faces Cruzeiro, in Uberlândia, and is looking for a victory to try to get started in the Brasileirão.
"In football, there's no time to let your head down. We have a big game on Wednesday against Cruzeiro, a qualified team with good players, and we're looking for a win, which can help us have a good run in the championship," he concluded.
