The last time Flamengo and Santos faced each other at Vila Belmiro was unforgettable for Flamengo fans. Not only because it was the first victory for the team from Gávea over Santos at the stadium, but also because of the atmosphere surrounding it: with Andrade at the helm as coach, following the death of former goalkeeper Zé Carlos, and marking a period of growth for the team on their journey towards a sixth World Cup title.
The recent history of the rivalry is also encouraging for the Flamengo team. After all, their last defeat to the São Paulo team was four seasons ago, in 2007, at Vila Belmiro, by a score of 3-0. Since then, there have been six matches, with four Flamengo victories and two draws. In total, Santos has the upper hand, with 41 wins. Flamengo has won 37 times, and the teams have drawn 27 times.
Last year's victory, however, was remarkable. On the day it completed its thousandth match in the history of the Brasileirão, the team achieved a historic comeback. Robson opened the scoring for Santos in the 24th minute of the second half. When everything seemed to favor Santos once again, Adriano, from outside the area, equalized in the 32nd minute. In the 43rd minute, Pará, with an own goal, sealed the result that took Flamengo to ninth place and relieved a tense atmosphere surrounding the team.
In 2010, in the only match between the teams, another historic game took place. The 0-0 result wasn't good for either team, but it was the last game at the Maracanã before the stadium was closed for renovations in preparation for the 2014 World Cup.
