Pet says goodbye to Maracanã wanting more

Supporter believes Flamengo deserved a positive result in the duel with Santos

One of the red-and-black players with the most stories to tell at Maracanã, Serbian Petkovic left the pitch of the World's Greatest Stadium disappointed this Sunday (05.09). Hero of the 2001 Rio de Janeiro three-peat and one of the key players in the 2009 sixth title, the Gávea number 10 didn't get the farewell he wanted from the stadium. At 38, Petkovic still doesn't know if he'll return to play at the stadium, which won't reopen until 2013, after renovations for the 2014 World Cup.

That's why the midfielder would have liked to leave the field with the victory. And it wasn't for lack of effort that the three points didn't come. Even coming off the bench, the foreigner tried many chances to help the team score, but the ball stubbornly refused to go in.

"It was my last match here and, unfortunately, it didn't go the way I expected, but what can you do? We went after the result, we went after Santos, who are a very good team. We tried, but we couldn't do it," he said.

Always cheered by the fans, Pet thanked the affection of the Red-Black Nation, who filled the Maracanã in his farewell to the stadium.

"We went for it, the fans gave us a lot of support throughout the game, but we ended up not getting the result," he lamented.

Silas in the crowd - Rubro-Negro coach Silas was also rooting for a more positive farewell for midfielder Petkovic. The manager was hoping the number 10 would score a goal and give the team the victory.

"We don't have much to do about Maracanã. We need to change what we can do. Our situation doesn't allow us to look at that now. My biggest wish was for Pet to score a goal. In fact, that was his last game at the stadium. It would be important because of the idol he is to the fans," he concluded.
