A blow to his left ankle in the match against Palmeiras not only ruled Petkovic out of the final round of the Brazilian Championship before the World Cup break, against Goiás, but is still causing the midfielder pain. After taking advantage of his time off to visit his home country, Serbia, Pet returned to Flamengo this week to begin training for the offseason.
However, the player is not training with the rest of the group. The midfielder's activities have been carried out in the Medical Department rather than on the field. Despite this, he believes the discomfort will subside with time and assures that the injury is not serious.
"I'm undergoing treatment and avoiding impact. I'm doing weight training and walking well, without any problems. The pain is bothersome. It's a little above the ankle. I can move well, but with that kind of ankle support, it's a little uncomfortable. With work, the pain is going away, so I'm not worried about the future," he said.
Petkovic sees these days of work during the World Cup as an important time for the group to prepare for the second half of the year. He's betting that by the time the team travels to Itu on the 28th, they'll have some reinforcements ready to help them get going in the Brasileirão.
"We're doing important work. We're back in good shape and testing slowly, as we returned a little earlier than the other clubs. We're adapting to the new coaching staff, the new work system, and we have plenty of time to train. I think this offseason will be important. We'll expect some reinforcements in the coming days so we can travel with the whole group to Itu. That's the mindset. We'll have new players, we'll strengthen the team, and that's necessary for us to play an important role in the Brazilian Championship," he added.
This year, Pet played 25 games for Flamengo, starting nine of them. He scored two goals and provided one assist.
