On Wednesday night, Flamengo began its journey in yet another international competition, the 2017 Copa Sudamericana. And it started very well: it beat Club Deportivo Palestino 5-2 in Santiago, Chile, and opened up a great lead for the return match in August in Rio de Janeiro.

It wasn't just a match"very crazy", the confrontation also registered the end of some writings. Everton Ribeiro, with a beautiful penalty kick, scored his first goal for Flamengo. And Rafael Vaz, at the club for a year, also felt the the thrill of scoring while wearing the Sacred Mantle.

In addition to the players' unprecedented feats, Flamengo, for the first time in international tournaments, scored more than four goals in a match outside Brazil. Not that the team has been economical in its history against Brazilian or South American rivals. Who doesn't remember the 5-0 win against Santos at Morumbi Stadium in 1984? Or the 8-2 victory over Minerven in 1993 at Maracanã? But outside Brazil, in official matches, Flamengo had yet to surpass the four-goal barrier.

The previous record was set in the Mais Querido's debut in the Copa Libertadores da América. On August 11, 1981, Zico (three times) and Baroninho scored three goals for Cerro Porteño at Defensores Del Chaco in Asunción, Paraguay, giving the team a 4-2 away win. With this impressive opening, Flamengo showed who would dominate South America—and later the world—that year. 

But is 4-2 a rout? Some doubt it. However, 4-0 is, and two traditional Chilean rivals have already had to give explanations at home, after the Red-Blacks mercilessly crushed them. 

First in 1999. With Rodrigo Mendes scoring twice, Romário and Fábio Baiano completing the scoring, Flamengo overcame Colo-Colo at the David Arellano stadium, winning 4-0 in the second group stage match of the Copa Mercosul. That year, the Mais Querido would go on to win the championship and also score its biggest win in the competition, against Universidad de Chile, 7-0, but at the Maracanã. 

The same Universidad de Chile had nightmares again with Flamengo the following year, when the two teams met in the Chilean capital and Rubro-Negro applied another 4-0, goals from Edílson (2), Fabão and Denílson. 

A little more humble, but with a big goal difference, Flamengo still won 3-0 against River Plate in Buenos Aires, in 1982, against ULA (Venezuela), in 1984, in Caracas, and against Velez Sarsfield, also in Argentina, in 1997.
