Seeking continued improvement in preparation for next season, Flamengo will begin the year facing two foreign teams. Among them is Wolfsburg – GER, which midfielder Diego played for during his time in German football. Flamengo's other opponent will be a North American team yet to be determined.
With over 40 million fans worldwide, Flamengo will be reunited with North American fans after 11 years. The club's last appearance in the country was in 2006, in a friendly against América-MEX in Los Angeles. In total, Flamengo has played 12 games in the United States, winning seven, drawing two, and losing three. They scored 23 goals for and conceded 12.
Beyond the technical aspect, the preseason will feature several activations for fans. The Red-Black Nation present at the competition and following the team online will keep up to date with every detail of Flamengo's performance on and off the field.
This new step, which includes preparations for the season abroad, marketing initiatives, and showing Flamengo's matches to dozens of countries, as well as the exchange of ideas, are important points in the process of growing and strengthening the Flamengo brand, as highlighted by the club's president, Eduardo Bandeira de Mello.
"The Florida Cup is a great opportunity to start our preparations for the 2017 season on the right foot. Just like at our Training Center in Rio de Janeiro, in the United States the players will have the peace of mind and infrastructure necessary for proper training and will have two challenging matches ahead. Furthermore, competing in the competition is important for our marketing strategy. In recent years, Flamengo has regained its prestige, restructured itself, and can now dream of international recognition for its brand," says the Brazilian club's president.
