Rio de Janeiro's football scene couldn't have hoped for a better end to the year. Flamengo won its sixth national championship, Vasco won the Série B, and Fluminense and Botafogo avoided relegation. That's why the mayor of the Marvelous City, Eduardo Paes, was overjoyed this Sunday night. A Vasco fan, Paes praised all four of the city's major clubs and stated that Rio de Janeiro is still the national football capital.

"The Rio teams showed today why Rio is, without a doubt, the Brazilian football capital. The determination and talent of our players and the passion of our fans made this Sunday a special day. Flamengo is the Brazilian champion for the sixth time, and Botafogo and Fluminense remain in the First Division. The joy of Flamengo, Alvinegro, and Tricolor fans is joined by Vasco fans who, like me, are still celebrating the Série B title and the return to the First Division. It is a source of pride for any city to have its great clubs among the elite of Brazilian football in 2010. Congratulations, Flamengo, for being at the top of this list! And congratulations to all of Rio football!" he celebrated.
