CARACAS – Flamengo's delegation left on Tuesday for Caracas, Venezuela, where they will play in the second round of the Copa Santander Libertadores, next Wednesday (10.03), at 22 pm (Brasília time), with a reinforcement. The president of the Rio de Janeiro Football Federation (Ferj), Rubens Lopes, accompanied the red-black team as head of delegation, a position offered by the club's current board.

Grateful for the invitation, Rubens praised the stance adopted by the new presidency and explained the role of the head of delegation on an international trip.

"First, I'd like to say that I'm very honored by the president's invitation. I'm very pleased to be working with a Rio de Janeiro club, fulfilling my obligation. The head of delegation performs more political, relationship-building work. However, if we have any problems, I'm at Flamengo's service," said Rubens Lopes, explaining that this strengthening of ties with Patrícia Amorim was no surprise.

"I'm only here because of Flamengo's change in relationship with the Federation. And this hasn't just happened to us. Other institutions are highly praising this policy imposed in Gávea. The feedback is extremely positive, and this encourages everyone to collaborate more closely with Flamengo's needs," said Rubens.

Accustomed to living in the world of football, the director gave his opinion on the red-black team's participation in the 2010 Libertadores.

"Flamengo has everything it needs to reach the final. The club has demonstrated planning, and that's crucial. Everyone expects the club to be successful in the end. At least in the final, I believe it will be. Whether it wins or not, only time will tell," said the Ferj president, betting on a red-and-black victory over Caracas.

"I think Flamengo is the favorite. Without taking anything away from Caracas, if we analyze the teams, the Rio team is stronger. The opponent only has home advantage in their favor, and that can be overcome," said Rubens.

When evaluating the 2010 State Championship, the president of Ferj confesses that he is concerned, yes, but in improving the competition for the coming years.

"Aside from the drop in attendance, I believe the Championship remains a success. The Rio State Championship remains the best in Brazil, and it's not just one isolated issue that's keeping people out of the stadium. I believe there are multiple factors involved, but it's too early to talk about that. We're meeting with the clubs and will always be careful when making our conclusions. The intention is always to improve the competition," concludes Rubens Lopes.
