Flamengo has barely returned to training for the offseason, but is already thinking about its return to action in the 2010 Brasileirão on July 14th against Botafogo. Coach Rogério Lourenço goes even further: he's already thinking about the 2011 Copa Libertadores. According to him, the team's primary objective in the competition, which was to compete with the title favorites, has already been achieved. Now it's time to continue working hard.
"Our first objective has been achieved: we're in the top of the table. Many teams behind us haven't had the problems we've had. In seven games, we haven't repeated a lineup. I believe that the sequence of games with time to work will help us return to the top four. The important thing is to have the peace of mind to work with the players, have the support of the board and bring the best to the club," he stated.
But to make it far in the competition, Rogério knows his squad still needs to gain more depth. This could happen with the arrival of reinforcements and the return of Kleberson and Fierro, who are competing in the World Cup.
"We're aware of the challenges in terms of signings, but we already have Jean in place, along with some players who haven't yet returned, who will solidify the group. Furthermore, we have the reinforcements we're looking for to fill the absences we've had and contracts still to be renewed," said the coach, who points to the attack as the area most in need of signings.
"The attack today needs quantity and quality. In game conditions, we have Diego Maurício, who we can't put the responsibility of taking over the starting lineup right away, Vinícius, who is actually a midfielder who plays as a second striker, and Denis, who hasn't shown up. We need signings in all areas, but the attack is the priority," he concluded.
