Ready to make history in Gávea
Seeking to repeat the feat of the Zico Era, Rogério Lourenço sees the group close to its goal
By From the team at Flamengo's official website - inReaching a Copa Santander Libertadores semifinal is no easy task, and Flamengo knows it. So much so that, in the club's history, only three teams have achieved this feat: the 1981 team, which won the championship, and the 1982 and 1984 teams, which had the same base and were eliminated at this stage. Seeking to surpass these numbers and equal the victorious campaign of 81, coach Rogério Lourenço sees his team ready for the challenges.
The Flamengo coach heaped praise on Zico and company, but stated that his team's focus on past glories isn't enough. He said the team needs to work hard if it wants to win the second Libertadores in Clube de Regatas do Flamengo's history.
"Only the 1981 generation has reached a Copa Libertadores semifinal. We know that this historical moment is very beautiful when you tell it. To achieve this feat, it's not enough to just remember the past; you have to work hard, and it will be very important for us to achieve the same as that group," he said.
The coach sees the team very close to this goal, but at the same time, he knows that the task will not be easy.
"We're very close. We have four games left to reach the final, and the team deserves this result. They went through a lot of difficulties and recovered, with merit. Everyone here remains grounded, and we know it won't be easy for anyone to win this Libertadores," he said.
For Rogério, the key to overcoming difficulties and returning to the top of the Americas is just one: hard work. And according to him, the team is more than successful in this regard.
"Flamengo has worked well these past few days, and we'll be very aware of our opponent's strengths. They're good at closing down and come out quickly on the counterattack. We know this, and we're prepared," he added.
