Flamengo has already signed its second reinforcement for the rest of the 2010 season. After announcing defender Jean, the club agreed on Monday to bring back midfielder Renato Abreu, 32. The athlete will be presented on August 1st and his contract runs until December 2011.
The club's executive director of football, Zico, evaluated the player's signing and explained that Renato's contract with his club in the United Arab Emirates, Al-Shabab, runs until July 31st. Therefore, he won't return to Flamengo until August, when he'll be ready to play for the Red-Blacks, as he's an international signing.
"His contract ends on the 31st in Saudi Arabia, and everything will be settled from August 1st. He's a big name, we've been negotiating for some time, he's a player who's already identified with the club and we're counting on him to help us in the second half of the year," said Zico.
Carlos Renato de Abreu began his career in Santa Catarina as a striker, playing for Marcílio Dias and Joinville, and began to find success with Guarani in 2000. After that, he transferred to Corinthians. There, he became a midfielder, staying four years and winning numerous titles, before signing with Flamengo in 2005. He arrived at Gávea to help the team avoid relegation that year, and even though he was already playing as a midfielder, he was the team's top scorer that season.
In 2006, he was a key player in Flamengo's Copa do Brasil title, and in the Brazilian Championship, despite not finishing top of the table, Renato was nominated for the "Golden Ball" and "Best Midfielder" (Silver Ball) awards, presented by Placar magazine at the season-ending celebrations. The following year, he remained a key player on the team that won the Rio de Janeiro championship and is currently competing in the Copa Libertadores. Such success led to the player receiving offers from the Arab world, and he then joined Al-Nasr.
