One of the standouts of the Flamengo generation that suffered two Copa Libertadores eliminations in the round of 16, midfielder Renato Augusto arrived in Rio in recent days to spend his break from German football and continue his recovery from a left thigh injury. And one of the first places he visited was the club that brought him to life.
Last Wednesday, the player even went to Maracanã to watch the match between Flamengo and Universidad de Chile. He hugged his former teammates and cheered for the red-and-black team. This Monday, Renato went to Ninho do Urubu to continue treatment for his injury and celebrated being back home.
"I feel at home here, for sure. It's always good to come back. Flamengo has always been my home and it's great to meet up with people I met here 13 years ago, as well as the teammates I played with," he said in an interview with Flamengo's official website.
Rubro-Negro's number 10 in the 2007 Copa Libertadores campaign, the player, who has 55 appearances and three goals for Flamengo, revealed his expectations for Thursday's match and demonstrated confidence in his former teammates' qualification for the semifinals.
"I believe it's possible. That goal from Juan was very important and I think it could have been decisive for qualification. The Universidad de Chile team is good, there's no doubt about it, and the Libertadores is a different, more complicated championship, but Flamengo has the potential to return from there with that spot and I'll be rooting for that," he added.
Relive Renato Augusto's career - The player's track record with Flamengo is enviable. His first title was the Children's State Championship in 2003. He also won the Youth State Championship in 2004 and was a two-time Junior State Champion in 2005 and 2006. He began to be used in the professional ranks in 2005, but it wasn't until 2006 that he reached his peak, in the Copa do Brasil final, where he was revealed to the Brazilian scene.
In 2007, the midfielder was instrumental in Flamengo's Guanabara Cup and Rio de Janeiro State Championship victories, as well as being one of the team's key players in the Copa Libertadores da América. In 2008, despite his strong performances, he struggled with injury and was unable to play a regular season. Midway through the year, he was sold to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. He played 95 games for the club, scoring 11 goals and providing 13 assists.
