"I'm a defensive full-back, but I can also get upfield. I was trained in Grêmio's youth academy, where grit and determination prevail. In European football, I played in a back four. I grew a lot, with a European mentality and Brazilian irreverence." This is what Rodrigo Alvim, Flamengo's new left-back signing, described during a press conference on Friday morning, where he was introduced alongside another signing, midfielder Ramon.
Alvim was in Germany, but had been getting few opportunities at Wolfsburg, the current German champion. The player stated that he didn't think twice when he had the chance to come to Flamengo. "They [the German club's directors] understood that this is an opportunity that doesn't come around often. I'm very grateful to them, and today I'm realizing a dream, which is to be here at Flamengo," says the athlete, who signed a three-year contract.

For Rodrigo Alvim, what most influenced his desire to leave Germany wasn't the chance to play alongside renowned stars like Adriano. "The biggest attraction is Flamengo. Being able to wear this Sacred Mantle. I'm joining a winning team. It's always good to play with the best. Today, Flamengo has one of the best squads in Brazil," said the athlete, who previously played for Paraná Clube and Belenenses.
Although he's only legally eligible to play for Flamengo in the Rio Cup, according to vice-president Marcos Braz, Rodrigo Alvim said he'd be ready to play in the Fla-Flu match. "I could play tomorrow. Based on the tests I've done, everyone is very happy. I'm already 26 and have experience, but I'm going in with a young spirit, to help Flamengo."
Theoretically, Rodrigo Alvim will be Juan's backup, having been with the club since 2006. The new signing, however, says that the club's interests come first. "I have a lot of respect for Juan; he's a great player. My first goal is Flamengo, and then my personal goals. I'll try to give my all. I was treated very well. Everyone showed me a lot of respect."
The new number 32 already has his goals for 2010 on the tip of his tongue: "Our objective is to win the state championship for the fourth time and the Libertadores. Flamengo is the biggest club in Brazil."
