Blue card, monitor to review controversial plays, two-minute timeouts, unlimited substitutions, and of course, great plays and lots of fun. That was how the first edition of the Innovation Cup, organized by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), unfolded. The duel between teams from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo took place at the Anacleto Campanela stadium in São Caetano do Sul, and featured two Flamengo players on the Rio de Janeiro team: Diego Mauricio and Leonardo Moura. Zico was also there as the team's coach.
The competition will be held from 2010 to 2014, with five editions annually. At the end of each edition, a report will be sent to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and FIFA. To attend the game, fans exchanged their ticket for a kilogram of non-perishable food or a toy. All donations will go to underprivileged children. The idea behind the event is to test possible new rules for football.
Controversial move - One of the highlights of the evening was the request for a review of a play made by Zico, coach of the Rio team, after a penalty on Neymar was awarded by Salvio Spinola. The game then stopped and a committee formed by Salvio Spinola, assistants Roberto Braatz and Ednilson Corona, fourth official Rodrigo Braghetto, video assistant referee Walter José dos Reis, as well as the two captains Carlos Alberto, for the Rio team, and Elano, for the São Paulo team, went to watch the video of the incident. The penalty was confirmed and Baiano converted.
"These are valid innovations, and games like this serve to test them. When we asked to review the play (the foul committed by the Rio defense, which Baiano converted), it was also to see how it works, how long it takes, and everything else," said Galinho.
