In recognition of the good times experienced with the Sacred Mantle in 2016, two Flamengo players were nominated by the Uruguayan newspaper El País for the continent's selection.

Alan Patrick and Paolo Guerrero are among the names chosen by the prestigious publication and compete with stars such as Tevez, Miguel Borja, Gabigol and Lodeiro.

The list has been compiled since 1986 and selects the best player at each of the 11 positions each year. Players who play in the Americas are nominated. Past winners include Valderrama, Romário, Salas, and Riquelme.
